More employers claim college doesn’t matter, but many still do.

While some employers are dropping degree requirements, the shift to skills-based hiring is slow, affecting millions of workers without a bachelor's.

  • Some employers are dropping degree requirements, but many still prefer candidates with degrees.
  • Hiring based on skills instead of degrees could help millions of U.S. workers find jobs.

Ranji McMillan, who has been job hunting for over a year and has an associate degree, often feels discouraged when jobs don’t require a degree, fearing they’ll be low-quality positions. Despite employers stating they want to hire for skills, many still show bias toward degree holders.

Research shows that even when degree requirements are dropped, actual hiring of candidates without them remains minimal. A recent study found that hiring based on skills accounted for only 1 in 700 hires in 2023. This reluctance to hire non-degree holders keeps many qualified individuals from accessing opportunities.

Hiring Based on Skills

Employers focusing on skills can create a more effective workforce. Studies indicate that hiring based on skills is more predictive of job performance than relying on educational qualifications. However, many companies are hesitant to change their hiring practices, often defaulting to degree requirements as a safety net.

The Need for More Training

Many jobs will require more education and skills. By 2027, 70% of jobs are expected to need training beyond high school. Employers must adapt their hiring processes to assess skills better and potentially look at alternative qualifications rather than just degrees.

As McMillan continues her job search, she faces challenges, often feeling overwhelmed. Despite her extensive experience, she fears that without a bachelor’s degree, she might be overlooked.
