Workers who move for their job can get tax deductions for work-related moving expenses. To qualify, they must report these expenses on their tax returns at the end of the year. The IRS may approve these expenses as work-related, allowing the tax deductions. However, certain IRS rules apply.
First, the new workplace must be at least 50 miles farther from the worker’s home than their old workplace. For example, if someone previously traveled 4 miles to their old job, they need to travel 54 miles to qualify for the deduction. This 54 miles includes at least 50 extra miles from their home to the new workplace.
Second, the worker must prove that their old home was closer to their old job. To qualify, the distance from the old home to the old job must be added to 50 miles to determine the new distance to the new job. This combination allows the worker to deduct moving expenses.
If a worker meets all three criteria above, they can get tax deductions for work-related expenses. During tax filing, they should list these expenses on Form 3903 and attach it to their Form 1040 to benefit from the deductions.
