NEW YORK – Attorney General Letitia James announced that 548 guns were collected at a gun buyback event in Rochester, organized by her office and the Rochester Police. This initiative aims to reduce gun violence in New York. Since 2019, over 8,200 guns have been removed from the state.

“Gun buyback events help communities get rid of unwanted firearms,” said Attorney General James. “Each gun removed is a potential life saved. Thanks to the Rochester Police and local partners for making this event successful.”

The Rochester event yielded 548 firearms: 32 assault weapons, 306 handguns, and 152 long guns. This contributes to over 8,200 guns taken from communities.

“These buyback programs are crucial in preventing gun trafficking and keeping dangerous weapons away from the wrong people,” said U.S. Representative Joe Morelle. “I appreciate Attorney General James’ leadership in this effort.”

Monroe County Executive Adam Bello remarked, “Gun buyback initiatives help decrease the number of dangerous weapons and promote community safety. Thanks to Attorney General James and the Rochester Police for their collaboration.”

“These programs help tackle illegal guns and reduce violence,” said Rochester Mayor Malik D. Evans. “I encourage anyone with an unwanted gun to participate and help make our neighborhoods safer.”

Senator Samra G. Brouk added, “This initiative helps decrease firearms in our neighborhoods and prevents violence by compensating those who surrender guns.”

“Gun buybacks are essential for community safety,” said Senator Jeremy Cooney. “Thanks to Attorney General James for her commitment to public safety.”

Rochester Police Chief David M. Smith stated, “These events encourage people to surrender unwanted guns, which is crucial for reducing violence.”
