NEW YORK – Attorney General Letitia James announced that 548 guns were handed over at a gun buyback event in Rochester, organized with the Rochester Police. This initiative aims to reduce gun violence in New York, where over 8,200 firearms have been removed since 2019.

“Gun buybacks help communities rid themselves of unwanted firearms,” said Attorney General James. “Every gun collected represents a potential life saved. I thank the Rochester Police and all our partners for making this event successful.”

At this event, the 548 guns included 32 assault weapons, 306 handguns, and 152 long guns.

U.S. Representative Joe Morelle stated, “Programs like this are essential to stop gun trafficking and keep guns out of the wrong hands.”

Monroe County Executive Adam Bello added, “These programs help safely remove firearms from homes and decrease gun violence in our community.”

Rochester Mayor Malik D. Evans encouraged participation, saying, “Every unwanted firearm turned in helps reduce neighborhood violence.”

Senator Samra G. Brouk mentioned community efforts to prevent violence with initiatives like this gun buyback.

Senator Jeremy Cooney noted the importance of removing guns for community safety.

Rochester Police Chief David M. Smith emphasized that taking unwanted firearms off the streets is vital to curbing violence.
