(MENAFN) Former U.S. President Donald Trump launched his cryptocurrency platform on Tuesday, but it had a rocky start. Only a small fraction of the offered digital currency units were sold.

In September, Trump announced the World Liberty financial platform, which aims to raise $300 million by selling 20 billion units of a new digital currency at 1.5 cents each. By Tuesday evening, only 3% of the units were sold.

These units function as cryptocurrencies and offer voting rights on platform decisions. However, low sales were attributed to technical issues, including website malfunctions that may have turned away investors.

The platform will allow users to lend and borrow cryptocurrencies, similar to services from established platforms like Aave. Although Trump previously labeled cryptocurrencies as a “fraud,” he now supports them, presenting himself as a “Bitcoin president” if he wins the upcoming election.
