Vice President Kamala Harris aims to attract Black voters by promising to legalize recreational marijuana, safeguard cryptocurrency, and provide one million loans to Black entrepreneurs. This comes as some Black voters shift towards former President Donald Trump or remain undecided.

Former President Barack Obama suggested that some of this shift may be due to discomfort with the idea of a woman president, addressing the issue in Pittsburgh.

A recent NY Times/Siena College poll shows that while Harris still has support among Black voters, it has decreased compared to Biden’s 2020 performance.

Harris’s Strategy for Black Voters

Cannabis Legalization

Harris is pushing to legalize recreational marijuana, particularly appealing to younger voters. She confirmed her dedication to this issue on the podcast “All the Smoke” and emphasized the need for Black Americans to benefit from the cannabis industry.

Support for Entrepreneurs

She plans to provide one million forgivable loans of up to $20,000 to Black entrepreneurs to promote business ownership and wealth. Her initiative also includes regulating cryptocurrencies, as over 20% of Black Americans have invested in them.

Education and Health Initiatives

Harris’s agenda includes enhancing education and workforce development, focusing on Black male teachers and apprenticeship programs. She promotes mentorship initiatives like My Brother’s Keeper to tackle health issues affecting Black men, such as diabetes and mental health problems.

Harris will present these plans in Erie, Pennsylvania, where she plans to meet with Black men before a larger event.

“This agenda reflects Vice President Harris’ vision for an Opportunity Economy,” said campaign co-chair Cedric Richmond. “It’s about empowering Black men to thrive and build wealth.”
