Nike (NKE) is a leading athletic apparel and shoe company founded 60 years ago. It became publicly traded in December 1980.

Nike has had seven 2-for-1 stock splits. If you bought one share in 1980 and held it until October 2024, you would own 128 shares now.

The stock price was about $23 on its first trading day, equivalent to $0.18 per share after splits. That original share is now worth around $17,300 if you reinvested dividends.

Holding Nike stock for 44 years would give you 128 shares, but reinvesting dividends could increase that to over 456 shares. Dividend reinvestment plans (DRIPs) can have a significant impact on long-term growth.

Will Nike split its stock again?

Nike last split its stock before the 2015 holidays and has underperformed the S&P 500 since then. This makes another split unlikely for now.

The company is working on a turnaround with new leadership from Elliott Hill, former Air Jordan CEO. Future stock splits will depend on the success of this management change, which is still too early to judge.
