Woodworking is one of humanity’s oldest crafts, focused on shaping wood into useful and artistic items. Techniques include wood carving, carpentry, and making figurines. Its roots lie in ancient civilizations like Egypt and China, where wood was vital for construction and decoration. Over time, it has evolved into a blend of tradition and modern design.
The Dabgari Bazaar in Peshawar is famous for its wooden items, featuring Niaz Ali’s workshop, a skilled woodcarver with 35 years of experience. He learned from his grandfather, who made various wooden products.
Niaz recalls his childhood fascination with crafting: “I made a wooden truck as a boy, sparking my love for handicrafts.” He now creates diverse products, including grocery baskets, picture frames, and toys.
A woman in the bazaar admired hand fans, a traditional Pashtun wedding gift, but found them too expensive. Niaz explained that creating intricate items takes time, but the ongoing economic crisis limits customers’ spending on non-essentials.
Niaz finds pride in showcasing his work at national exhibitions since 2009 and hopes to receive the Presidential Award. His artifacts have even reached international buyers.
Although he declined a position at the Artisan Village due to inadequate pay, Niaz wishes to train others in his craft. He believes in creating a supportive environment for artisans and establishing institutes to preserve traditional skills.
