(MENAFN– The Conversation) The Queensland state election is happening this Saturday, with polls closing at 7pm AEDT. There are 93 single-member seats in Queensland, with no upper house. In the 2020 election, labor won 52 seats, the Liberal National Party (LNP) 34, and all others seven. Labor also won the two-party statewide vote by 53.2–46.8.

Two new polls in Queensland show a decrease in the LNP’s lead, although they are still likely to win on Saturday.

One poll by YouGov for The Courier Mail gave the LNP a 54.5–45.5 lead, with primary votes showing a shift in favor of Labor. Another Resolve poll for The Brisbane Times had the LNP with a 53–47 lead by respondent preferences.

The main reasons why Labor may lose are the “it’s time” factor, possible negative impacts from the federal Labor government, and Queensland’s support for the Coalition at the 2022 federal election.

The US presidential election is on November 5, with Democrat Kamala Harris currently leading Republican Donald Trump in national polls. However, the race is close, and the Electoral College system could favor Trump despite a popular vote win by Harris.
