Kamala Harris outpaces Trump with Latino voters on economy

A poll conducted by the Hispanic Federation and Latino Victory Project shows Harris leading Trump among Latino voters, with inflation, jobs, and housing dominating election concerns.

A new poll from the Hispanic Federation and Latino Victory Project, conducted between October 2 and 10, 2024, shows Latino voter preferences in key states. Out of 1,900 respondents from states like Arizona and Florida, Vice President Kamala Harris leads with 54% support, while Donald Trump has 33%, and 9% are undecided.

About 71% of Latino voters are likely to participate in the November election, preferring in-person voting on Election Day (44%), followed by early in-person voting (30%), and vote-by-mail (26%).

Voter interest is rising, with 60% reporting increased enthusiasm due to Harris’s campaign. Many are engaged: 35% follow election news daily, and 39% check updates several times a week.

Economic issues dominate concerns, with 60% citing the cost of living and inflation as top priorities. Jobs (38%) and housing affordability (32%) are also significant. Social issues like abortion rights (24%) and gun violence (20%) matter, in addition to immigration concerns (17%).

Approval ratings show 51% support for President Biden, while 56% disapprove of Trump. Harris enjoys a 61% favorability rating, with 34% viewing her unfavorably.

Campaign outreach is notable, with 64% of Latino voters contacted by campaigns to encourage voting. Democrats contacted 68% of these individuals, while Republicans reached 49%. Common contact methods included texts (33%), phone calls (20%), and door-to-door visits (15%). Engagement varied by state, with Pennsylvania (77%) and Wisconsin (80%) seeing more outreach.

Both Trump and Harris are actively appealing to Latino voters. Harris is focusing on economic and immigration issues, while Trump emphasizes border security and economic opportunities, particularly in conservative Latino areas like Florida.

During a town hall in Florida, Trump attempted to connect with Latino voters but faced tough questions on immigration and the January 6 Capitol events. He highlighted his economic successes as key to winning support in battleground states like Nevada and Arizona.

Just days prior, Harris also participated in a Univision town hall, where she positioned herself as a champion for the middle class and promised to uphold Biden’s policies on asylum at the border.
