Athletic giant Nike (NKE -0.67%) has been around for 60 years and went public in December 1980.

Nike has had seven 2-for-1 stock splits since its IPO. If you bought one share in 1980 and held it until October 2024, you’d own 128 shares today.

The stock started at about $23 per share, equivalent to $0.18 today after splits. Now, that single share is worth around $17,300 if dividends were reinvested:

Holding Nike stock for 44 years gives you 128 shares, but with reinvested dividends, you’d have over 456 shares. Dividend reinvestment plans (DRIPs) can greatly boost your returns.

Will Nike split its stock again?

The last stock split was in 2015, and since then, Nike has underperformed the S&P 500. This makes another split unlikely soon.

However, Nike is trying to improve under former Air Jordan CEO Elliott Hill. A successful turnaround might lead to another split, but it’s too early to tell.
