NEW YORK – New York Attorney General Letitia James announced that 548 guns were collected at a community gun buyback event in Rochester. The event, organized by the OAG and Rochester Police, aims to reduce gun violence. Since 2019, over 8,200 guns have been taken off New York streets.

“Gun buyback events help communities remove unwanted firearms,” said Attorney General James. “Every gun collected is a potential life saved. Thanks to the Rochester Police and local leaders for their support.”

At the event, 548 guns turned in included 32 assault weapons, 306 handguns, and 152 long guns.

U.S. Representative Joe Morelle commented, “Gun buyback programs are essential for preventing gun trafficking and keeping weapons out of dangerous hands. I appreciate Attorney General James’ leadership.”

Monroe County Executive Adam Bello added, “These programs help reduce unwanted firearms in homes and prevent illegal access. Thanks to Attorney General James and the Rochester Police for their partnership.”

Rochester Mayor Malik D. Evans stated, “Gun buybacks are key to reducing illegal guns in our neighborhoods. I encourage residents to participate and thank everyone involved for making Rochester safer.”

Senator Samra G. Brouk said, “This event helps lower violent incidents while rewarding responsible actions within the community.”

Senator Jeremy Cooney emphasized, “This is about taking guns off our streets and improving safety.”

Rochester Police Chief David M. Smith remarked, “Events like these encourage people to surrender unwanted firearms, helping to reduce gun violence.”
