NEW YORK – New York Attorney General Letitia James announced that 548 firearms were turned in during a gun buyback event in Rochester. This initiative, in collaboration with the Rochester Police Department, aims to reduce gun violence. Since taking office in 2019, Attorney General James has removed over 8,200 guns from New York State.

“Gun buybacks empower communities to get rid of unwanted firearms,” said Attorney General James. “Each gun turned in today helps prevent potential tragedies.”

The Rochester event saw 548 guns turned in, including 32 assault weapons, 306 handguns, and 152 long guns.

“These programs help eliminate dangerous weapons and combat gun trafficking,” noted U.S. Representative Joe Morelle.

Monroe County Executive Adam Bello added, “Gun buybacks are key to community safety and reducing gun violence.”

Rochester Mayor Malik D. Evans encouraged unwanted firearms to be surrendered to create a safer community.

Senator Samra G. Brouk expressed that community actions like these lower violent incident risks. “Together, we can prevent crises.”

Senator Jeremy Cooney emphasized the importance of such initiatives in ensuring public safety.

Rochester Police Chief David M. Smith said, “Taking care of unwanted firearms helps reduce community gun violence.”
