NEW YORK – Attorney General Letitia James announced the collection of 548 firearms during a gun buyback event in Rochester, organized by her office and the Rochester Police Department. This initiative aims to reduce gun violence in New York. Since taking office in 2019, she has facilitated the removal of over 8,200 guns statewide.

“Gun buyback events help communities get rid of unwanted firearms,” stated Attorney General James. “Each gun collected is a potential tragedy prevented. Thank you to everyone who made this event successful.”

At this event, the 548 firearms included 32 assault weapons, 306 handguns, and 152 long guns.

“Programs like this help keep firearms out of the wrong hands,” said U.S. Representative Joe Morelle. “I appreciate Attorney General James’ leadership in reducing violence.”

Monroe County Executive Adam Bello emphasized that such buyback programs are essential for community safety, helping to responsibly dispose of unwanted firearms.

Rochester Mayor Malik D. Evans added, “These events are crucial in our efforts to combat illegal guns. I encourage participation to help create a safer Rochester.”

“This buyback event will lower the chance of violence in our neighborhoods,” noted Senator Samra G. Brouk, while Senator Jeremy Cooney reiterated the importance of removing guns to enhance public safety.

Rochester Police Chief David M. Smith expressed that these initiatives motivate community members to surrender unwanted firearms, essential for reducing gun-related incidents.
